Chennai: Tamil Nadu police registered 617 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, arrested 621 persons, and seized 296kg of ganja, 1.3kg of other narcotic substances and 802 narcotic tablets during a three-day statewide special enforcement drive conducted from July 3 to July 5. Police also registered 650 cases related to banned tobacco products and seized 6,653kg of prohibited tobacco products.The statewide drive was conducted as part of the Tamil Nadu govt’s continuing efforts to curb the illegal trafficking, possession, sale and transportation of narcotic drugs and banned tobacco products. District and city police units carried out vehicle checks, raids, surveillance and intelligence-based operations at identified vulnerable locations across the state.According to police, all cases detected during the drive were registered under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985, the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, and other relevant laws.The special enforcement drive formed part of its continuing strategy to combat the illegal circulation of narcotic drugs and prohibited tobacco products through continuous intelligence-led operations and stringent enforcement.Police appealed to the public to share information about the illegal sale, possession, transportation or trafficking of narcotic drugs and banned tobacco products through the Drug Free TN mobile application, the toll-free helpline 10581 or WhatsApp number 9498410581.
