Ahmedabad: A city sessions court on Thursday sentenced a 42-year-old woman to 10 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for throwing acid on her former boyfriend and injuring him following the end of their relationship. The incident occurred on the evening of Jan 27, 2024, near an AMTS cabin close to Kalupur railway station. According to the prosecution, Juhapura resident Mehzabin Chhuvara approached Rakesh Brahmbhatt and allegedly threw acid on him while questioning him about their breakup. She reportedly asked why he had ended the relationship and was no longer involved with her. Brahmbhatt, a conductor with the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS), suffered injuries to his left eye, back, and private parts.Kalupur police registered an FIR against the woman under IPC provisions related to acid attacks and for causing grievous hurt to a public servant during duty hours with the intention of preventing him from carrying out his duties. After the trial, sessions judge Samir Sangani acquitted the accused of the charge relating to assault on a public servant, observing that the offence was not connected with the victim’s official duties. However, the court held her guilty under Section 326A of the IPC, which deals with acid attacks. While sentencing the woman, the court said, “Looking at the manner in which the crime was executed, the accused did not act under a sudden fit of passion or provocation; rather, the accused acted with premeditation and deliberation. She approached the victim at a public place where he was discharging his official duties and did an acid attack with the intent to cause grievous hurt, actuated by malice and jealousy stemming from a five-year-old past love affair, thereby causing him severe injuries.”The court also directed that the fine amount be paid to the victim after recovery from the convict.
