Kolkata: The renewed attempt to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) to Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) will pave the way for Rs 500-crore project comprising a 950-capacity hostel building, a substation building, a service building, academic block and a food court. This is part of a phased modernisation plan of the business school campus to transform it into a carbon-neutral and ecologically green facility.IIM-C director Alok Kumar Rai had earlier written to CM Suvendu Adhikari and Union minister of state Sukanta Majumder seeking help and has been assured that all bottlenecks will be resolved. The Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) loan is of Rs 515 crore for the constructions.

Rai said, “The project consists of upgradation of physical infrastructure of IIM-Calcutta. The first phase consists of building nearly a 950-capacity hostel, a four-storey academic building, a substation, a service block and a food court which was facing bottlenecks for several years. I wrote a letter to CM and also to MoS(Education) appealing to attend to the issue as it is directly linked with student facilities and growth of the Institute. We have been assured that all the bottlenecks will be resolved and growth of the institute shall be facilitated.”Majumdar earlier thanked the CM and state education ministers for taking the initiative to clear the NOC. “IIM Calcutta has a major project worth Rs 500 crore funded by the Central Govt. Even though it is a central institution, it was stuck for a long time because the state govt held back a minor NOC required from the KMC,” he said. According to a KMC assessment department official, the NOC will be given only after payment of the tax dues.TOI in 2024 reported that the business school will get a green hostel in two years. On Jan 31, 2024 the then Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan had virtually laid the foundation stone of the new hostel. The proposed hostel, service building and substation building will be a G+9 storied facility consisting of 726 rooms with common washrooms and 200 rooms with attached washrooms. The hostel complex with GRIHA 5-star rating will provide all modern amenities like energy-efficient rooms, bicycle parking, smart heating, water and waste management and others. “There is an urgent need to build a hostel and academic buildings so that the institute can retain its competitive edge on the national and global stage. Hence infrastructure norms like carbon zero, ability to efficiently support and use digital technologies are now essential requirements,” said an official.(Inputs from Saikat Ray)
