THANE: A fire broke out in the electrical duct of a 16-storey residential building in Maharashtra’s Thane city on Sunday.Emergency responders safely evacuated residents and brought the blaze under control without any casualties, news agency PTI reported.The fire was reported at around 9.20am at the Sunrise Glory apartment building, an official said.Around 70 to 80 residents were evacuated from the building in the Shilphata area, while a man trapped inside an elevator was rescued by fire brigade and disaster management personnel, officials said.“The fire broke out in the electrical duct spanning from the first floor to the sixth floor of the 16-storey building. Thick, heavy smoke quickly filled the internal corridors and stairwell, creating panic among the residents,” said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

Emergency teams, including the fire brigade and electricity company staff, rushed to the spot, he said.According to Tadvi, fire personnel rescued resident Firoz Khan, who was trapped in the lift on the sixth floor after the power supply was cut.“The fire has been completely extinguished, and the situation is now fully under control,” he said.Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze was caused by a short circuit in the electrical duct, officials said, adding that power supply to the building was temporarily disconnected as a precaution.(With agency inputs)
