Ahmedabad shopkeeper gets one year in jail for youth’s electrocution

Ahmedabad: Darshil Modi, who owns an Amul parlour in Bopal, has been awarded a one-year jail term by an Ahmedabad rural court after an 18-year-old was electrocuted by a signboard pole in 2020.According to the prosecution, Modi erected an iron pole for an advertising signboard on a public road and illegally drew an electricity connection from his shop without authorisation or safety measures. On July 6, 2020, during heavy rain, Govind Yadav, 18, touched the pole while passing by and was electrocuted. The court held Modi guilty under Section 304 A of IPC for criminal negligence causing death. It said no activity that could endanger life may be carried out in a public place unless adequate safeguards are provided and the electricity company has granted permission. The court ruled that Yadav’s death was the result of negligence and rejected the attempt made by the accused to shift blame to others involved in installing the signboard. The accused was also fined Rs 5,000.
